Have you ever read a book that captivates so many readers? They said the books had changed their life. But, you can't absorb even one chapter. You experienced the circumstance, didn't you? This situation often sparks heated debates on social media with diverse opinions surfacing regarding this topic.
This post expresses my opinions on this topic.
1. Wrong timing with the wrong person
Each book aims at specific object readers. As writers and authors, they want their work to reach the hearts of as many readers as possible. However, to write this kind of book is very hard to write because no one is able to please all people. In addition, if the author writes a book associated with a specific topic, they showcase their strong opinion and delve deeper into subjects, captivating a group of readers who are interested in this kind of topic, fostering a strong bond between writer and audience.
It also depends on genders, characteristics, occupations, age, cultures, religions and so on; individuals may like or dislike a book. You read a review on Goodread, listen to advice from others or your friend introduces you, and you can imagine what you will read in this book. Unfortunately, the book fails to appeal as expected, it signifies a mismatch. You are not the intended target audience the author aimed to reach.
Moreover, certain books might be excellent, but the timing of your access to them might not align well with your readiness or availability to read. Take How to win friends and Influence people as an example. This book has heated debates on many social media platforms. Initially, I harbored a dislike for this book, perceiving it as a guide to treating people nicely and kindly with untruthful and dishonest intentions. Recently, I have read this book and I find it very interesting. There are many helpful lessons that I have learnt from it. I always remember advice in this book that we should call the name of a person we are talking with, signifying respect. I also apply this lesson in this book to my daily life. When meeting new people, I try my best to remember their name. This simple gesture has garnered kindness from others, enriching my experiences. I am always myself and I don't need to be different to satisfy others. However, the book gives valuable advice on navigating social relationships intelligently in both my professional and personal life.
The relationship between you and books can be changed. At times, some certain books are not suitable for you due to lack of adequate life experience. Yet, let's give it another opportunity in the future when you are mature enough.
2. Authors and audiences often hold differing perspectives regarding the subject matter.
The authors show their opinions related to the subject matter with their own purposes. However, when the audience reads a book with their own expectations. Purposes of authors don't align with expectations of readers, failing to connect relationships between authors and readers.
Most books in spiritual genres such as “The alchemist” and “The Four Agreements”. Readers can't read with a logical mind because these books are mixed up with a combo of fantasy, childish, and underlying meaning. Based on their small stories in these books, readers have to spend time and effort thinking about the lesson being hidden in it. Therefore, many readers give up on reading these books.
This is advice for those who want to absorb these books. You need to relax and keep going to read stories containing fantasy details. Magic could have never happened in real life, but you should let your imagination work and ponder the messenger hidden on pages.
If the book is very hard for you to read, you can read a review to see the point that you may not understand and what lesson that reviewers learn from this kind of book. You can refer reviews and ask for opinions of your friend who finishes a book. This approach deepens comprehension and offers alternative ways to engage with these books.
The post explores the disconnect between certain books highly praised by some readers yet failing to resonate with others. It delves into various reasons for this discrepancy, citing mismatches in reader expectations versus author intentions and the impact of timing and maturity on book reception. Additionally, it discusses differing perspectives between authors and audiences, particularly in spiritual genres. It advises readers on approaching challenging books, emphasizing relaxation, imagination, and seeking alternative perspectives through reviews or discussions to enhance comprehension and engagement.
